Western Michigan University faculty's involvement with the American
Association of University Professors began in 1950 as a non-bargaining unit.
By 1959, it had a roster of 95 active members. Growing concern about
governance, salaries, healthcare, promotion and tenure motivated the
Chapter to organize as a bargaining unit and the first contract negotiations
began in the mid-1970s. Unable to reach an agreement after twelve months
of negotiating, a second team was organized and, after an additional five
months at the table, was able to recommend an agreement. The first contract
was ratified in 1976.
While a documentation of the Chapter history is ongoing, current and past
presidents met during fall semester 2003 to film an oral history which will
soon be available to members for viewing. Contact the Chapter office if you
are interested in borrowing a copy of the tape.
Constitution and By-Laws
The Western Michigan University Chapter of the American Association of
University Professors' constitution and by-laws were revised and approved in
April 2000. A hard copy booklet was distributed to members in January 2001,
and an electronic version is available for viewing on the Chapter website.
